Outside lights can do a lot for your home. They illuminate walkways, add accent to your landscape, and give a general boost to the ambiance around your property. Outdoor string lights are one of many options available for outdoor lighting. There are far too many varieties to examine here, but we will look at a few different types to give you a general idea that may help you choose what kind of illumination meets your needs.

What exactly are string lights?

They are simply lights that are arranged in a linear fashion, giving the appearance of continuity. Often, they are physically strung together, but they do not have to be connected to each other to be in this classification. The most obvious example would be something akin to Christmas lights. These are simply small bulbs that are linked together by the very conductors that supply electricity to the individuals. Rope lights are another prime example. Not all of them are connected though. There are solar varieties that follow a walkway, small safety indicators that are set into a stairway, and uniform vaxcel lighting that illuminates several points around the house on the exterior walls as well. If they occur out of doors, they are outside string lights. Street lamps also fall into this category.

Lighting options for the exterior

There are many ways to illuminate the outside of your home or business, garden or signage. Spots look nice when mounted on the ground aimed up toward a surface to focus attention on a specific area. These are especially useful when drawing attention to a sign. Garden lighting, including the newer solar style are useful when your intention is to indicate walkways or to very lightly illuminate an area. Rope lights can also be useful for lighting up a safe passageway so as to prevent tripping. Sconce style fixtures are often used next to exterior doors to help visitors get safely to the door or to warn away intruders.

Environmentally sound options

With new technological advances, there are many options available to lower our impact on the environment. LED or light emitting diodes consume very little electricity, and have a long life, reducing both our carbon footprint and our waste. They are small, and utilizing such low voltages, can be powered by rechargeable batteries. LEDs are becoming available for more and more applications. They are put together in arrays to collectively produce more lumens, and in doing so, they are becoming a viable option for far more applications than simply garden and solar. By converting to this new technology, you can save money on your bill while helping to reduce problems to the environment.

I love all the Christmas decorations on the outside of the house - string lighting can look very pretty but I don't like the 'chaser' lights or the ones that appear to be flashing on and off in manic patterns - I like something more restful and with pretty colours! Thanks for all the great information in this hub - a good read, voted up!
